ONS: Recent graduates more likely to work in lower-skilled jobs

The percentage of recent graduates working in lower-skilled jobs has risen from 26.7% in 2001 to 35.9% at the end of 2011, according to a new report released today by ONS.

The report also shows that the unemployment rate for new graduates - those who graduated in the last two years - stood at 18.9% at the end of 2011, much higher than the rates for those who graduated two to four years ago (6.7%) and four to six years ago (4.4%).

The unemployment rate for everyone in the UK stood at 8.4%.

It shows:

• The number of recent graduates has increased by around 41% over the past decade;
• The recent recession has impacted most on the employment rate for recent graduates compared to all graduates and non-graduates;
• Graduates with a degree in medicine/dentistry earn the most at around £21.29 per hour. Graduates with an arts degree earn the least at £12.06 per hour. Non-graduates earn around £8.92;
• New graduates (those graduating within two years) have the highest unemployment rates.
